Training and Events

The MJC hosts workshops, webinars, training sessions, research presentations, meetups — and Northern Exposure, an annual visual journalism conference. Our team regularly leads trainings and presentations at journalism conferences and events worldwide.  

The Minnesota Journalism Center also maintains a calendar of training events across journalism and beyond — in person and virtual — that might be of interest to Minnesota journalists. It also maintains a separate calendar of events hosted by news organizations across the state.

JAM: A nonprofit news community cohort

Journalists at nonprofit and member-supported news organizations across Minnesota told us they were looking for more ways to connect and learn from each other.
So the MJC, with support from the McKnight Foundation, has launched what the group has dubbed the JAM: Journalism Alliance of Minnesota. We gather monthly — virtually and in person across the state — to dive into issues and questions driven by the group's members. The group has its own newsletter, and will be launching a Slack workspace soon.

We plan to launch other cohorts, serving other parts of Minnesota's news ecosystem, later this year. (Interested in helping us start a new cohort? Have ideas about which parts of the journalism community might be best served by a community like this? Email Meg at [email protected].)

Journalist Support

Fundamentally, the Minnesota Journalism Center is here to support the work of journalism and journalists across the state of Minnesota. We're at our best when we can be agile and responsive to the journalism community's needs. We love to troubleshoot, get creative and connect the dots.

Our best programs — like the NICAR conference mentorship, the Report for Minnesota legislative reporting project and the JAM cohort — have come directly from questions, ideas and problems raised by journalists in the community. And there's more in the works!

What's on your mind?  We want to hear from journalists across the state: What are you excited about? What great idea would you like to try to launch? What do you want to learn about? What are you curious about? What challenges do you see on the horizon? What tools do you need?
