Real-World Training with Minnesota Journalists
Part of the MJC's mission is to create opportunities for student journalists to gain hands-on experiences working in newsrooms and reporting in the field. Through our innovative programming and partnerships, University of Minnesota students are able to graduate with on-the-ground work experience, published bylines and connections within a tight-knit community of dedicated professionals.
Our programs place students in fast-paced, news-rich environments like the State Capitol; prepare them for field reporting through safety workshops and weeks-long bootcamps; and actually place them inside the newsrooms of Greater Minnesota to embed as community journalists
Legislative Reporting Project
Report for Minnesota’s Legislative Reporting Project connects student reporting on the Minnesota Legislature with news outlets across Minnesota.
In 2026, five students worked at the Minnesota State Capitol with a longtime political editor and longtime political photojournalist to produce weekly news stories that fill coverage gaps for local news outlets in communities in all areas of the state.
Report for Minnesota
The Hubbard School supports several student internships at local newspapers in Greater Minnesota. The program combines our students' need for experience with the great opportunities available in local newspapers where help is much needed.
Hubbard Reporting Experience
Hubbard journalism students participate in an immersive, full-time, hands-on opportunity to cover the news as it’s done in professional newsrooms, with professional coaching at every step of the process.
The 10-day program takes place during August in Murphy Hall with Hubbard School instructors.
AccessU: Community Journalism Class
The mission of JOUR 4175: Brovald-Sim Community Journalism Practicum is to cover a hidden campus community every Spring semester. Communities have included the disabled community, nontraditional students, the First Gen community and life during and after Operation Metro Surge.
Professional Opportunities
Throughout the academic year, Hubbard School students have the opportunity to interact with professional journalists at conferences, trainings and other events, thanks to sponsorships and programming from the Minnesota Journalism Center.
